paper lamp shade

An investigation on the relationship between form and material.

This lamp shade was created as a final project for ARCH 150: Introduction to Architecture at Yale University [2021]. Inspired by the mesmerizing effects of natural forms such as coral reefs, beehives, and lotus husks, I aimed to construct a form with an ambiguous start and end point. While the entire form acts as a habitat for a lightbulb, each tube plays a role in creating shadows against each other and with surfaces around the lamp shade. The shade, furthermore, can be used as for a sconce or desk lamp, and generates vastly different patterns of light and shadow. In a pinch, it can also be used as a fun hat.
